Aqua-Sac™ is a revolutionary alternative to the traditional sandbag.  The Aqua-Sac S.O.S Bag is a sturdy jute sack containing a water absorbent material, which is retained in a finely-woven inner bag. After inflation by immersing in water for 5 - 8 minutes the S.O.S. Bag will weigh between 13 and 14 kg and measure 54cm x 31cm x 10.5cm high.

Aqua-Sac™ S.O.S Bags are intended for use in construction defences against flood water up to 60-70cm (2 feet) in depth. The height of all flood defences constructed from Aqua-Sac S.O.S. Bags should be at least one bag or l0cm higher than the expected water level.

 Instructions on how to use the Aqua-Sac™Bags

 Aqua-Sac™S.O.S. Bags are supplied individually wrapped, in packs of 25. As soon as a flood warning is received, or flooding appears inevitable, remove the required number of S.O.S. Bags from storage and immerse them completely in water for 5 - 6 minutes to inflate them to a target height of 9 - 10cms.Flood Control Products

Do not immerse Aqua-Sac™S.O.S. Bags for longer than 5 - 6 minutes as the bags will be approximately 90% inflated after this time.  It is better to complete the inflation process after the bags have been incorported into the flood defence structure.

Construct defence. Aqua-Sac™S.O.S. Bags are used in the construction of flood defences in a similar way to traditional sandbags.  They conform to surrounding surfaces, and can be used to form a dam or to build a flood defence barrier in combination with plastic sheeting.

Remove any debris from the area, place the inflated S.O.S. Bags lengthways and parallel to the direction of water flow.  Place bags in layers, like courses of bricks in a wall making sure that each bag overlaps the one below by half.  Drop the Bags into place to help eliminate gaps and create a seal.  Interleave a plastic sheet between layers to improve the seal.

The best construction with minimal seepage is built using butt-joints between  bags, created by pushing two bags together so that the height is the same at the joint as in the middle of the bags.  S.O.S. Bags should be butted up to a wall or other surface in the same way.Flood Control Products

A dam can be built with a minimum wall thickness of one bag length. Dropping the bags hard onto the course below helps consolidate the bags.  If the dam needs to be more thatn three layers high, for it to be stable, it should be built in a pyramid style, 2 - 3 times as wide as it is high, with alternative layers lengthwise and crosswise

 Inflate the Aqua-Sac™S.O.S. Bags:

As soon as the flood warning is received, or flooding appears inevitable, remove the required number of Bags from storage.Flood Control Products Also, consider bringing other items that may be needed, to the site of the first flood defence to be constructed.

 Please Note:

Aqua-Sac™S.O.S. Bags are intended for use in fresh water, to control flooding from non-tidal rivers, rainwater etc..  They are not suitable for use in sea water, or brackish water from tidal rivers.

Seepage: The outer surface of the bags can be slippery when wet, and the ground under an inflated bag will sometimes be slippery. To limit the damage, aly a few S.O.S. Bags flat on the floor around the inside of doorways and other openeings to avoid the surface becoming wet.

Bag removal and clean up after flood:  Once the bags have been removed from site it is advisable to wash away any residue that may be left behind.

Disposal: SAP is a non-hazardous waste suitable for disposal in an approved solid waste landfill or incineration plant, in accordance with local regulations.  Therefore, unused (dry) and used (wet) S.O.S. Bags can be sent to landfill or incineration.  Another possibility for disposal of limited numbers of Aqua-Sac S.O.S. Bags is so-called greening, whereby bags are buried under a tree during planting to provide a water reservoir.  If greening is impractical, bags may be cut open to remove the SAP, which can be dug into soil to improve moisture retention.
